Interdisciplinary Graduate Certificate in Substance Abuse

The Interdisciplinary Graduate Certificate in Substance Abuse seeks to expand the number of behavioral health professionals ready to work in inter-professional and integrated health settings with populations impacted by substance use disorders (SUD)
in the Memphis and greater Midsouth region.  The certificate is designed for students concurrently pursuing or already holding a degree in one of the following programs: School of Social Work, Department of Counseling Educational Psychology & Research, and the Department of Psychology.  

Admission Requirements

  • Short essay - In 1-2 pages please share why you are seeking a certificate in clinical social work. Please include a brief autobiographical statement and relevant academic, internship, volunteer, and/or work experience.
  • Three references with their addresses, telephone numbers and email addresses (persons who may be contacted  in reference to the applicant's competencies and ability to work with populations impacted by substance use disorders (SUD).
 

Substance Use Disorders Interprofessional Graduate Certificate

Interprofessional Graduate Certificate in Substance Abuse - 15 hours

Core Course - Students are required to take the following course (3 credit hours):

  • SWRK 7949 Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT)

Core Elective- Students are required to take the following course (3 credit hours):

  • SWRK 6061 Treatment of Substance Use Disorder
  • COUN 7710 Addiction Counseling
  • PSYC 7705 Neuropsychopharmacology

Elective Courses - Choose three courses (9 credit hours) from the following:

Graduation Requirements

  1. Students must complete all four required courses with an average grade of B (3.0) or higher for a total of 15 credit hours
  2. Students may earn no more than 3 credit hours of C+, C, C- grades.

Retention Requirements

All students are required to maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00. Should the student’s cumulative GPA fall below that mark, a period of one semester will be allowed to correct the deficiency. At the discretion of the chair, the director of graduate studies in the student’s college, and the Assistant Vice Provost for Graduate Studies, this period may be extended one additional semester. No more than 6 hours of “C-,” “C” or “C+” will be applied toward meeting graduate degree requirements. “D+,” “D,” and “F” will not be applied towards the graduate degree requirements. All students who fall below a GPA of 3.0 for one semester, and all students who earn a grade of “D+,” “D,” or “F” will be automatically referred to meet with the program retention committee the following semester.
