Students investigate educational technologies and innovative instructional approaches that support learning. Students are introduced to various definitions of technology integration and consider how to use technology effectively in classroom environments, including digital equity, universal design for learning, accessibility, and blended and online instruction.

Teams of students use instructional design principles to design and develop an instructional system, emphasizing advanced development skills with current technologies. Students contract with real clients, define project goals and timelines, manage instructional design projects, and document the instructional design process.

IDT 8230 - Directed Writing in Learning and Design (3 credits)

Description: Students use academic writing to develop a scholarly document to address a problem of practice in the field of learning, design, and technology, demonstrating their readiness to enter the dissertation process. Students complete a written comprehensive examination as part of the course. [May be repeated for a maximum of 9 credit hours.]

Planned, supervised experience in an instructional setting appropriate to student’s specialization area of instructional design and technology. The student will have the opportunity to synthesize knowledge and skills and demonstrate professional competencies in educational or training settings.

Description: Students develop knowledge about the doctoral process, scholar identity, and the research methods, designs, and applications learning and design scholars use to theoretically and empirically investigate problems of practice. Students develop and defend a proposal for an endeavor that influences a contemporary, complex problem in the field of design, learning, and technology. Students who have approved dissertation proposals are expected to seek and receive institutional review board (IRB) approval.
