Be sure to check the Registrar's Office Semester Dates and Deadline pages for the Last Day to Withdrawal. Check with the Financial Aid office before withdrawing from any class, as it may negatively impact your financial aid.
Late and Retroactive Withdrawals for Undergraduate Students
The Late and Retroactive Withdrawal policy for the College of Arts and Sciences is that a student must withdraw from all classes during the petitioned semester. Our college does not grant partial course withdrawals. It is a one-time exception and will not be granted for future semesters. DefinitionsA Late withdrawal is used for the current semester and after the final date to drop classes has passed. We will not accept a Late Withdrawal before the final date to drop classes.
A Retroactive Withdrawal is for the semester immediately before the current semester, summer not included.
Late withdrawals and retroactive withdrawals are requests to withdraw all courses taken during the petitioned semester after the semester deadline to withdraw from classes has passed. These requests are not guaranteed and may be granted in cases that are 1) serious, 2) unforeseen, and 3) beyond your control, e.g., car accident, job transfer, death of an immediate family member, etc. Petitions are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Students must withdraw from all courses in the petitioned semester. If the withdrawal petition is approved, the student will not be eligible for another withdrawal in future semesters.
ExamplesYou may request a late withdrawal (for the current semester) if:
-
You are currently attending Fall 2024 and the semester deadline to withdraw has passed. You may request to withdraw from all currently enrolled classes.
You may request a retroactive withdrawal (immediately previous semester) if:
-
You are attending Spring 2025 classes and are requesting to withdraw from all Fall 2024 classes.
-
You are attending Fall 2025 and are requesting to withdraw from all Spring 2025 classes.
Late Withdrawal Process
AFTER the semester late withdrawal deadline has passed as posted in the Registrar's Semester Dates and Deadlines, /registrar/calendars/index.php . You must fill out the CAS Withdrawal petition and attach supporting documentation demonstrating that the situation was 1) serious, 2) unforeseen, and 3) beyond your control. Petitions without documentation will be automatically denied.
Our office will review your request, and if approved, the Director of Student Services will notify you by email and send a Schedule Adjustment form to the Office of the Registrar Office to have you withdrawn from all classes. If approved, you will not be eligible for another late withdrawal in future semesters. An academic withdrawal does not guarantee a financial reimbursement. Enter a Helpdesk ticket with the Office of University Students and Business Services, /usbs/.
