Graduate student voices on stress and mental health: Narrative survey results from a Midsouth University in the United States
Wednesday, 25 February 2026
This study examined graduate students' experiences of stress and mental health at the University of Memphis, using narrative survey responses from more than 100 participants.
The study highlighted graduate students as a uniquely vulnerable subgroup of the population, revealed students are stressed, though the meaning, chronicity, and management of stressors vary. More, graduate student narratives chronicled actionable steps universities can take to reduce stress and improve mental health among graduate students.
The results showed that stress among graduate students is shaped by interconnected academic, financial, and relational factors, and is further intensified by the need of access to mental health resources.
