Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering

We keep the world turning.

Mechanical engineers contribute to society and economy in many areas—energy, manufacturing, transportation systems, defense, aerospace, robots and unmanned vehicles, air-conditioning and refrigeration, medical devices and many others. In other words, the majority of the products you use every single day are all made possible by mechanical engineers. Nearly 20 percent of the nearly 3 million engineers in the United States are mechanical engineers.

Hit the ground running with one of the broadest skill sets in engineering. Mechanical engineers use their breadth of knowledge, versatility, creativity and team-working skills to build new products and systems. All those cool things you read about, like establishing colonies on the moon and Mars, 3-D printing of biomedical implants or building the next-generation aircraft and automobile engines. They're all happening right here at Herff. Build medical devices. Create renewable energy systems—wind and solar. Design and test new aerospace engines and propulsion systems. Get your feet wet testing turbines in the Mississippi River. The possibilities are endless.

To me, service is not just a word; it’s a way of life, and that is exactly what I plan to do following graduation. After I graduate, I want to continue to help people through my engineering profession by creating innovative solutions that will improve everyday life. At the same time, I would like to grow professionally by working towards my Professional Engineer (PE) license.

My favorite Herff College of Engineering memories would be those of the Herff engineering family. Engineering college is not just a school where you get a diploma; it’s where you build life-long friendships and memories that you will never forget. Whether it’s a late-night study crunch, pizza at an ASME event, or a hug on a rough day, it’s the little moments, the laughs as well as the tears, that will be cherished long afterwards.

My advice to current and future students would be to never give up! Engineering is hard; it’s a fact. But you are here for a reason, and you can do it. It’s going to be challenging at times, but we are here for you. You are amazing, and no one in this whole wide world can replace you! So go out there and crush it!!
