The Power of Women

How Women Give

Women's giving plays a key role in the growth and sustainment of the University of Memphis. The University has been the proud recipient of significant gifts from women who are passionate about its future. We hope that the Women's Leadership and Philanthropy Initiative will deepen the connection women feel to the university and provide a way for women to invest in its success.

A 2012 report by the Women's Philanthropy Institute states that single women are more likely to give to charity, and give at a higher level than single men, across most income levels, after accounting for other factors that affect giving. Women consistently bring their values into their decisions about giving. Women appreciate being part of a network to learn and share best practices on giving because they care deeply about sharing their wealth with their communities. Consider the following:

  • Women (82%) are more likely than men (71%) to be motivated to give by how their gift can make a difference in the world; they want to set a good example for the next generation (women: 44 %, men: 25 %).
  • Being actively involved with an organization and its mission through volunteering is also one of the most powerful motivators for women to give (women 66%, men 50%).

A new survey by The Chronicle of Philanthropy ranks Memphis as the second most generous city in the country. What a perfect time and place to launch the Women's Leadership and Philanthropy Initiative.
