Writing and Communication Services is a combined writing and speaking studio that provides free, one-on-one consultations with a trained staff of graduate students. We can provide feedback on academic papers, group presentations or speeches, or personal documents like letters of intent or scholarship essays. We can assist you at any stage of the creative process, from understanding an assignment, brainstorming ideas, and implementing standard citation styles such as APA or MLA. Although we do not offer line-by-line editing services, you can come to Writing and Communication Services for help developing your own editing strategies, improving the mechanics of your writing, thinking critically about your writing, and honing your verbal and non-verbal presentation styles. If you are presenting a speech or project, you can also practice in our presentation studio.

We also offer writing services in Patterson Hall 223 through The Write Start initiative. The Write Start initiative focuses on providing writing assistance to 1st and 2nd year students in English 1010 and English 1020 courses. To learn more about The Write Start initiative, click here!

Additionally, alongside our colleagues from University Libraries, we regularly host drop-in Tigers Write and Tigers Speak sessions at McWherter Library for students searching for immediate assistance with writing, speaking, and academic research. Also, we are proud to assist with writing consultations and thematically relevant presentations for the Dissertation Writers Retreat, an event co-hosted by University Libraries and the UofM Graduate School.

Our staff travels to classrooms, campus events, and leads workshops every semester to introduce Writing and Communication Services to students, graduate teaching assistants, professors, and staff. See the Center for Academic Success and Achievement outreach and referrals page to request a visit.

All questions or concerns can be directed to the Writing and Communication Services leadership at casa-writecomm@memphis.edu.
