Freeburg University Professorships

Freeburg Professorships are endowed by a generous gift from Catherine and Charles Freeburg. The purpose of these professorships is to highlight and encourage outstanding research in the Humanities at the University of Memphis. Catherine Freeburg received her MA in English in 1972 and taught in the department for a number of years. She and Charles understood the vital role that language, literature, history, and philosophy play in understanding our world and ourselves. In addition to supporting the University of Memphis, Catherine and Charles Freeburg were active members in the Memphis community and supported many other organizations. The College of Arts and Sciences awards up to two professorships annually to tenured faculty in a Humanities Department (English, History, Philosophy or World Languages and Literature).

Awardees receive $5,000 per year for three years to support their research programs. Consideration is given to ensure equitable distribution among all of the Humanities disciplines; however, outstanding achievement is the major consideration. Awardees are ineligible for re-consideration for a minimum of three years following expiration of the initial award. Nominations are sought annually for tenured Humanities faculty who:

• Demonstrate exceptional achievement in teaching, scholarship, service, and outreach
• Are associate or full professors
• Have served as members of the University of Memphis faculty for a minimum of eight years

University of Memphis faculty members, department chairs, and administrators are eligible to make nominations.
